Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has been under fire since November 30, after giving his closing remarks during PDP-Laban’s formal declaration of him as their presidential candidate.
In his speech, the presidential aspirant had a slip of the tongue and unintentionally cursed at Pope Francis while recalling a terrible 5-hour traffic he had been in during the pope's visit.
“Gusto kong tawagan, ‘Pope putang ina ka, umuwi ka na. ‘Wag ka nang magbisita dito."
The church and many other Catholics have been quick to slam Duterte, calling his acts "unethical" and "dishonorable" making him unfit for the highest post in the government.
While many has taken a dislike to the Davao City Mayor, his supporters and Davao citizens alike have been reliable backups in defending him from controversies.
If you're now having doubts of supporting Duterte because of the recent issue, perhaps the list compiled by Ian Enero, a Dabawenyo, would change your perception about voting an outspoken "cursing" politician.
In addition, Duterte has owned up to his mistake of cursing the Pope and released an official statement:
“I sincerely express sadness and regret that the part of my speech mentioning Pope Francis in relation to the monstrous traffic gridlock in January came across as being disrespectful to his Holiness Pope Francis. It was farthest from my mind and was never my intention;
I acknowledge that I should have explained better my point on the traffic gridlock. My strong statement on the incompetence of those in government to address the traffic problem was my expression of anger borne out of the helplessness of the millions of commuters suffering from this daily gridlock.”
