India – Surgeons removed a 5-foot hairball from a 15-year old girl’s stomach. Kavita Kumari, an Indian teenager has gone so ill she can’t even drink water. For the past year, Kavita has been addicted to eating her hair and also other people’s hair, even strands of hair she found around.
Her mother, Phool Devi was still incapable of accepting that her daughter has mental problems. “'We did not know she was in the habit of eating hair. Though I noticed many times that she plucked couple of strands from my hair and even her classmates told me she did the same with them. But I never took it seriously as I thought she was plucking their hair to tease them. I had no idea she was apparently eating hair”, Phool Devi said. She also added that she began notice her daughter’s lack of appetite, whenever Kavita eats she just vomits afterwards. Kavita complains of severe stomach pains, and gets weaker everyday they begin to accept she won’t survive.
Trichophagia is the compulsive eating of hair associated with Trichotillomania or hair pulling. People with trichotillomania also swallow the hair they pull, which eventually forms into a hairball that collects in the stomach known as trichobezoar. Sometimes people with this disorder also eats the hair of others. It is considered as a compulsive psychological disorder.
An extreme form of trichobezoar in which the "tail" of the hair ball extends into the intestines, can be fatal if misdiagnosed this is called Rapunzel Syndrome. Surgery is required to remove the mass.
Bizarre this incident may be, Kavita’s mother was just so glad her daughter’s starting to recover and now safe. “I am so thankful to the doctors for saving her life”, she said.
