The ceiling of the Cinema 5 of Ayala Center Cebu collapsed on a Monday night, June 15, under heavy rainfall.
There were at least 6 moviegoers who were injured in the accident according to Ayala Center Cebu official statement on its Twitter account. According to its COO Mark Evans, up to 350 people were inside the theater for an exclusive movie screening conducted by the Australia-based company, Dreamscape when the incident happened. Nevertheless they had thought, the such happening can take place.
"At around 8:50 in the evening today, a part of the ceiling fell during an exclusive movie screening at Cinema 5," the statement said. "We are currently investigating the cause of the incident," it added. The mall managment said its main priority was to ensure the safety of those who were present when the incident took place.
A video uploaded by Alexis Yap on Facebook showed what was happening inside the said theater. The people were all surprised as they get down to avoid the water from the ceiling. In just a moment, the ceiling of the back portion gave in that led to another commotion.
In one statement, it is said that the emergency team was nowhere to be found. The security guards arrived for about 25 minutes after. Evans was visibly dismayed and vowed to file charges to the mall. Jeanette Japzon, corporate communications manager of Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI), which owns Ayala Center Cebu said the part where the ceiling collapsed was the "acoustic ceiling." Various units, including Bureau of Fire Protection were on set to investigate the situation.
Despite of the incident, the movie screenings of the other theaters were not affected. The remaining theaters were still operational.

This just in! At Ayala cinema 5!Thank you to all those concerned about our safety. Indeed, it has been a long night for most of us. Was answering calls and messages non-stop right after the incident at Ayala Cinema 5. I'm just grateful that nothing very serious happened to the attendees of the ad campaign launch of crazydomains.com.au. The event started out smoothly until the horror happened. I can only imagine what Mark Evans and his team is going through right now. At the end of the day, no one was seriously hurt and I praise the Lord for that. Thank you Lord Jesus for protecting us all last night. A speedy recovery to those who got hurt and a big thank you too to all the heroes that helped out last night.
